August 07, 2026

After the partial lunar eclipse on 28 August 2026 (see report on Namibian.org), star lovers in Namibia can look forward to the next event. However, it will not take place in space, but on the ground. More precisely: At a lodge about 90 km north of Windhoek...

The Namibia Scientific Society (NSS) invites you to the 'Southern Star Party 2026' from 11 to 13 September 2026. As in previous years, the event will be held at the Rock Lodge north of Okahandja.

The pre-party programme will kick off on Friday afternoon, 11 September 2026, with an introduction to the 'Stellarium' app. In the evening, the participants explore the starry sky.

The official opening ceremony will take place on Saturday morning. Amateur astronomer Lutz von Dewitz will explain the interaction of the the Sun, the Earth and the Moon with regard to the seasons and lunar phases. Following this, the sun will be observed using a special 'telescope'.

In the afternoon, 'Lunar and Planetary Astro-Imager' Clyde Foster will give a presentation entitled "Planets: Our Neighbors in Space." In the evening, Dewitz will introduce participants to astrophotography ("From Telescope to Image").

Detailed information about the programme, costs and registration for the Southern Star Party 2026 can be found on the event page on the NSS website. You can participate for the entire weekend or just as day visitor on Saturday.

Incidentally, Lutz von Dewitz regularly provides astronomy enthusiasts with a monthly preview of events in the Namibian night sky. He publishes his 'Astro News' in the news section of the NSS website.
