Not only Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) near Windhoek meets globally recognised standards for safety and service. Walvis Bay International Airport north of Swakopmund has also passed the rigorous review by the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
This was announced by the Namibia Airports Company (NAC) in December. Both airports achieved an effectiveness rating of 83% during the recertification process. The NCAA issued the airport certificates in early December.
In the area of safety, both airports fully meet and adhere to the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARP) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The criteria cover 17 areas. These include safety management systems, emergency planning, rescue and firefighting, and runway safety. Maintenance and data integrity are also covered.
NAC renovated and expanded HKIA at Windhoek (IATA code: WDH) a few years ago (here is a list of facilities). A hotel is currently in the planning stages. Walvis Bay International Airport (IATA code: WVB) recently received a new fire station (see also the facilities list).
More details regarding the recertification of Namibia's two international airports can be found in the full announcement on the NAC website. The assessment takes place every two years. The next one is therefore scheduled for November/December 2027.
