Christmas and New Year: Busy times on the Namibian coast

Holidaymakers from abroad should avoid Swakopmund and other coastal towns over the festive period. Or not: if they want to experience a typical Namibian Christmas.

Many Namibians travel to 'Swakop' as early as mid-December. It is hot in the interior, so the cool coast is calling. Swakopmund is an absolute must for families with older children because you simply have to chill out on the beach with friends. After all, it's the summer holidays.

It's not until the first weekend in January that the crowds on the coast die down when many people return home to work. Incidentally, drivers should be very careful not to drink too much. The police step up their alcohol checks during the public holidays.

In Namibia, 25 and 26 December are public holidays: Christmas Day and Family Day (see also the overview of Namibian public holidays in the Travel Advice section on Namibian.org). In addition, there is 1 January, New Year's Day.

Authorities and many businesses are closed on these days. This also applies in part to the working days before and after Christmas. Normal everyday life only resumes from the second weekend in January, after the end of the summer holidays.
