Sodalite

Sodalite is best recognised by its very dark blue colour.

Sodalite

Introduction: Sodalite is so-called because of its sodium content and occurs in carbonatite and syenites. Namibia boasts the largest deposits of sodalite in southern Africa, best recognised by its very dark blue colour. White and yellow-green sodalite is also common. Used as an ornamental stone for tiles, carvings, jewellery, stonework and cladding.

Distribution: 10km west of Swartbooisdrif in Kaokoland, 4km south of Kunene River

Composition: Silicate

Crystal system: Cubic

Lustre: Greasy, vitreous

Streak: White

Hardness: 5.5-6
