Microcline

Microcline is mined for use in the paint and ceramic industries.

Introduction: Microcline has small deviations in its intersecting right-angled cleavage. This give rise to its Greek names: micros meaning 'small' and kleinen meaning to 'incline'. It forms as very large crystals and lumps in pegmatites where it is mined for use in the paint and ceramic industries.

Distribution: The Karibib District and in pegmatites south of Otjiwarongo on the farm Okanjande 145 and in the Maltahohe district on farm Neuhof 100. Crystals have also been collected from Klein Spitzkoppe and the Erongo Mountains.

Composition: Silicate

Crystal system: Triclinic

Lustre: Vitreous, pearly

Streak: White

Hardness: 6-6.5
