Clinochrysotie is the most common form of asbestos.

Clinochrysotie

Introduction: Clinochrysotile (formerly known as chrysotile) is named from Greek words chrysos meaning 'gold' and tilos for 'fibre'. It is the most common form of asbestos and is now considered a severe health hazard.  Its claim to fame was being widely used as a fire retardant and in fireproof textiles.

Distribution: Great Karas Mountain and Keetmanshoop District serpentinites. It also occurs in the Rehoboth District and near the old Gorob copper mine.

Composition: Silicate

Crystal system: Monoclinic

Lustre: Silky

Streak: White

Hardness: 2.5
