Western dwarf burrowing skink

Introduction: Western Dwarf Burrowing skinks (Scelotes capensis) can be found under stones, amongst rotting succulent aloes and on sandy soil. If disturbed they will wriggle rapidly to find cover and the blue tail is a mechanism to distract any attackers from honing in to the rather fragile head.

Distribution: The rocky, succulent veld of central southern Namibia including the Fish River Canyon extending north between Rehoboth and Bullsport.

Diet: Termites.

Colouring: A light olive-brown body has a coppery sheen which changes to a dark brown colour towards the tail. The belly is greenish-yellow. The tail is blue-grey.

Breeding: Females give birth to between 1 to 4 babies.

Size: Max SVL 57mm.
