Namaqua day gecko

Introduction: Namaqua day geckos (Phelsuma ocellata) are small day geckos with a small inner toe. Their prominent eyelids cannot close as they form a continuous ring around their large eyes. Look out for them running and jumping between boulders on rocky outcrops and rock strewn hillsides. They will forage on succulent bushes or fig trees.

Distribution: An isolated species can be found in and around Fish River Canyon.

Diet: Small beetles and insects.

Colouring: The back is light brown to blue white with a pink tinge.

Breeding: Females lay 1 or 2 small, hard-shelled eggs laid under a piece of rock in September. Additional clutches are often laid later in the breeding season.

Size: SVL 30 to 40mm. Max SVL 42mm.
