Northern pygmy toad

Introduction: Northern Pygmy toads (Poyntonophrynes fenoulheti) are named after the specimen collector, J.P. Fenoulhet. They inhabit bushveld vegetation and are also strongly associated with rocky outcrops. Males typically call from grass stems above the water, a characteristic long, high-pitched creaking sound, repeated in quick succession.

Distribution: Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) only.

Diet: Ants and spiders and other insects.

Colouration: Grey to brown overall upperparts with dark blotches, with well-spaced warts all over. The underside is usually clear with black blotches or spots.

Breeding: Tadpoles grow up to 23mm. Their development into frogs is complete after only 19 days.

Maximum size: 45mm.
