Long reed frog

Introduction: Long reed frogs (Hyperolius nasutus) have long and prominent noses (nasutus). Their bodies are narrow. Habitats include vegetation that has grown along savannah and grassland, such as swamps, steams and large rivers. Calls are a high-pitched piercing chirp, emitted amongst grasses, sedges or reeds.

Distribution: Riverine locations from Epupa Falls ranging eastwards along the Kunene, Kavango Rivers, through Bwabwata National Park extending to Victoria Falls. Also found in the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve.

Diet: Aquatic insects.

Colouration: Upperparts are a uniform shiny green to brown, with bright white dorsal bands. The underside is silvery-white.

Breeding: Up to 200 eggs are laid in clusters of 4 or 5, attached to underwater vegetation. Tadpoles grow up to 32mm with the tail often more than twice the length of the body.

Maximum size: 25mm.
