Karoo caco

Karoo Caco are restricted to habitats associated with dry Karoo.

Karoo caco

Introduction: Karoo Caco (Cacosternum karooicum) are restricted to habitats associated with dry Karoo, the region from which this species is named. Males occasionally call in the day; a short, loud croak indicates a territorial call, often whilst sat in the water with only the head and vocal sac above the water.

Distribution: Selected locations along the Orange River including Noordoewer.

Diet: Insects and spiders.

Colouration: Uniform olive-brown to khaki-brown upperparts, often tinged with orange or red. Small warts are evident on the body. The underside has bold dark blotches and the throat of the male is a dirty yellow.

Breeding: Tadpoles grow to about 40mm and develop into frogs after about 28 days.

Maximum size: 30mm.
