Scented pod acacia

Scented pod acacia: Scented pod acacias (Acacia nilotica) inhabit northern Namibian regions such as around Epupa Falls, Kunene River and the certain areas in the Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip). They are common in the Cuvelai, a series of small waterways that occasionally channel water across the flat landscape of northern Namibia into the Etosha Pan. These locations are associated with sandy or calcareous soils in mopane savannah.

Dark green leaves are browsed by game with smaller species of stock and game partial to the pods, which are poisonous if consume in large quantities. Bright yellow flowers bloom from September to April and can be used to treat open wounds. The dark grey-brown bark extracts can be a stimulant or a sedative and reddish-brown thorns can be either straight or slightly curved.

Edible gum is used for making confectionery and is also an adhesive. The heavy and hard nature of the red wood makes it suitable for fencing poles and as a fuel.
