Papyrus

Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) are most abundant in the channels and waterways of the Okavango Delta. It is also evident in the Linyati Marshes and Kavango River. This fast-growing plant grows in clumps with tall bare stems that are topped with a crown of thread-like flower spikelets.

It is water-log and frost resistant, requires lots of water and sunshine. Some traditional uses include drying and splitting the stems to weave into doors and Tswana sleeping mats. The ancient Egyptians made paper from the pith in the stalks.
