Fish louse

Introduction: Fish louse (Anilocra capensis) are a parasitic species living on fish. Features include a smooth body, triangular head with short antennae and hooked claws on the end of the legs that grab onto and grip the host. Usually found on the side of the head of a fish such as the Hottentot.

Distribution: From the mouth of the Orange River north to Luderitz, Sandwich Harbour, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund

Diet: Opens up a wound to feed on fish blood and body juices

Colouration: Slate grey

Breeding: Eggs emerge from the brood pouch beneath the thoracic segment of the female

Max size: 60mm
