Compact amphipod

Introduction: Compact amphipods (Lysianassa ceratina) are so-called because of their sturdy and compact bodies. Features include elongated eyes, short and stout antennae and limbs that are protected by long side plates. This is the most common of over 30 species of the family Lysianassa, usually found scavenging under stones or algae on rocky shores, in gravel or in sand.

Distribution: Throughout Namibian waters from the Orange River mouth north to Luderitz, Sandwich Harbour, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, Cape Cross and Möwe Bay.

Diet: Feeds on minuscule food particles

Colouration: White to brown

Breeding: Eggs are carried in a clearly visible brood pouch underneath the body

Max size: 10mm
