Burrowing amphipod

Introduction: Burrowing amphipods (Urothoe grimaldii) have short but wide bodies and setose legs. This assists greatly in their burrowing abilities, the body and legs create a tunnel which sand and water are driven out, propelling the animal forwards.

Distribution: From the Orange River mouth north to Sandwich Harbour, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay, Wlozkasbaken, Jakkalsputz, Cape Cross and Terrace Bay.

Diet: The mouthparts searches the sand for food particles as it burrows

Colouration: Off-white

Breeding: New amphipods emerge as adults from a brood pouch located underneath the body.

Max size: 5mm
