Galjoen

Dichistius capensis
This is the national fish of South Africa, a game fighter.

Galjoen

Introduction: Galjoen (Dichistius capensis) are also known as black bream, blackfish or damba. They frequent sandy beaches and rocky outcrops along the coast, mainly in search of food, keeping mostly to shallow waters. The rough surf, sometimes near the shoreline is another favoured habitat.

This is the national fish of South Africa and is known to fishermen around Namibian waters as game fighters. Light-tackle enthusiasts are in for a real fight. Features include firmly attached scales and prominent, well-developed fins spines.

Distribution: Along the coast of Namibia including the Skeleton Coast, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, Luderitz and Sandwich Harbour.

Diet: Small white mussels, red bait and barnacles

Colouring: The colours vary from almost completely black in the sea to silver-bronze in sandy areas.

Max size: 55 cm

Max weight: 7kg
