A torpedo-shaped gamefish, renowned in southern Africa.

Cape yellowtail

Introduction: Cape yellowtails (Seriola lalandi) are a torpedo-shaped gamefish of great renown in southern African waters, known to follow pilchard migrations. They congregate mainly in large offshore shoals. Seriola is an old Italian name for this fish. Lalandi is derived from the naturalist Delalande.

Distribution: Throughout Namibian waters including Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, Henties Bay, Torra Bay and Terrace Bay.

Diet: Small fish and squid, mantis shrimps and crabs

Colouration: Bright yellow tail, blue-green upperparts separated from the flanks by a broad yellow or bronze band. The belly is white and the fins yellow.

Breeding: Spawns near the coastline

Max size: 150cm. Max weight: 58kg
