Kaokoland dassie

Introduction: This species known as the Kaokoland rock dassie (Procavia welwitshii) has a limited distribution as indicated in its name. It is also associated with rocky areas like its close relative the rock dassie and its habitual requirements are identical. In most other respects they are similar to the rock dassie.

Distribution: The more scattered rocky outcrops of Kaokoland and in piles of loose boulders.

Diet: They browse on stunted bushes and annuals or grasses that grow in their terrain habitat.

Colouring: Varies within populations and localities but may be brown, yellowish-brown or fawn.

Breeding: The average litter is 2 or 3, occasionally 4. Little else is known of their reproductive habits.

Size: Kaokoland rock dassies have a head and body length of about 46cm and have slightly shorter hind feet of the rock dassie.
