Parabuthus raudus

Introduction: The species Parabuthus raudus digs a shallow burrow at the base of vegetation. Found on rocks, logs and shrubs. Sprays a strong venom when provoked.
Distribution: The largest and most common scorpion found in the Kalahari sand systems. Also observed in the Fish River Canyon.
Diet: Consumes insects and spiders head first.
Colouration: Brown to orange with distinctive darker last 2 tail segments and sting.
Breeding: Secures female by grasping with a set of bulbous pincers. This affectionate display last from 5 to 30mins, forcing her around whilst massaging her with his mouthparts. Sometimes a litter of over 32 is produced, not really a surprise when you consider the amount of foreplay involved.
Maximum size: 160mm
