Kavango hooktail

Kavango Hooktails were first recorded upstream in the Kavango River with the confluence of the Cuito River.

Introduction: Kavango Hooktails (Crenigomphus kavangoensis) were first recorded upstream in the Kavango River with the confluence of the Cuito River. This riverine species favours degraded sections of river banks.

Distribution: Found all along the Kavango River from Nkurenkuru to Popa Falls.

Colouration: Sand-coloured with brownish markings. There are 3 cream-coloured stripes on the thorax and their eyes are light blue with a purplish gleam.

Breeding: Emergence takes place in December. Oviposition takes place in small side streams and in fast-flowing shallow water running over gravelly sand.

Flight season: December to the end of March.

Max size: 40mm.

Conservation: Not threatened.
