Blue basker

Introduction: Blue Baskers (Urothemis edwardsii) are named after Henri Milne Edwards (1800-1885), of the Jardin des Plantes de Paris, who collected this species in Algeria. Both sexes perch close to the water, usually on shrubs in lush swampy locations.

Distribution: Kavango, Kwando and Chobe Rivers, the Von Bach Dam and Hardap Dam.

Colouration: The only dragonfly with a blue body with a black basal wing spot on the hind wing. On the back of each segment of the abdomen are black markings.

Breeding: Eggs are laid in a dancing flight guarded by the male.

Flight season: October to May.

Conservation: Not threatened.
