Introduction: Meadow Whites (Pontia helice helice) are usually the first species of butterfly to emerge in spring. It is appropriately named because it occurs in meadows and old fields, preferring open country and grasslands. Large numbers are a common sight.

Distribution: Northern Namibia and the Zambezi Region (formerly Caprivi Strip) .

Breeding/Larval food: Various spp. of caper bush. Their flowers have numerous stamens. The leaves of this plant are often eaten as spinach in Namibia by some!

Colouration: White underside with the upper side sporting white and black markings.

On the wing: Throughout the year.

Wingspan: Males and females: 35 to 40mm.
