Eyed bush brown

Introduction: Eyed Bush Browns (Henotesia perspicua) favour the grassy banks of streams, where they can be seen in a 'hopping flight' through the thick grass. Surprisingly, this does not damage their wings.

Colouration: Hindwings possess a row of either 2 or 3 small eye-spots, a prominent feature on the wings of both sexes. There are also 2 of each such eye-spots on both forewings, a larger one and a smaller one, each resembling a bull's eye target. Rings of black, orange or dark brown circle a white centre.

Breeding: Larvae feed on various species of grass.

On the wing: Flies throughout most months of the year.

Wingspan: Male: 40 to 43mm. Female: 45 to 48mm.
