Redbreast tilapia

Distribution: Redbreast tilapias are found in various water bodies across Africa, and it is also present in certain regions of Namibia. It inhabits rivers, lakes, and other freshwater habitats with suitable conditions.

Diet: The redbreast tilapia is an omnivorous fish and has a varied diet. It feeds on algae, aquatic plants, small invertebrates, and detritus found in its environment. This adaptability contributes to its widespread distribution.

colouration: As the common name suggests, the redbreast tilapia has distinct reddish colouration on its breast area, especially during the breeding season. The rest of the body is typically coloured in various shades of olive and brown.

Breeding: During the breeding season, male redbreast tilapia display more intense colouration, including bright red on their breast and fins, to attract females. They build and defend nests in shallow waters to protect their eggs and fry until they can swim on their own.
