Language
Is English spoken in Namibia? Yes. The official language of Namibia is English, although it is spoken by most Namibians as a second or even third language. As a result, everyday speech has developed its own flavour: a lively mix of English with words, rhythms and expressions borrowed from Afrikaans, Oshiwambo, Khoekhoegowab, Otjiherero and other local languages.
This hybrid style is affectionately known as Namlish, and it has become a recognisable part of Namibian identity. It reflects the country’s multilingual heritage, its humour, and the way people switch easily between languages in daily conversation. Here we will guide you through a selection of common Namlish terms and expressions you’re likely to hear while travelling, along with a few helpful phrases from Namibia’s major local languages. Think of it as a friendly starter pack to help you understand and enjoy the country’s unique linguistic personality.
