Double banded sandgrouse

Introduction: Double-banded sandgrouse (Pterocles bicinctus) prefer mopane woodland as well as inhabiting Acacia and other woodland savannah. They are common along roadside edges, found in pairs or small groups in the shade of rocks and plants during the day.

Distribution: Etosha, Epupa Falls, Caprivi and other central, northern and some southern Namibian regions.

Diet: Feeds mainly on seeds including red pea as well as weeds.

Description: Bicinctus refers to the Latin for 'double girdled' or the double breast bands of white above black.

Breeding: Solitary nesters that lay 2 or 3 eggs in a shallow scrape in sand, gravel or soil between July and September, incubated for 24 days.

Size: 25cm.

Weight: 230g.
