Village weaver

Introduction: In Namibia, village weavers (Ploceus cucullatus) are found on the edges of riverine forests and woodland types that are near water. The common name of this species is taken from their habit of visiting parks and gardens in and around towns, mostly in other areas of the southern African region. This species often falls prey to little sparrowhawks.

Distribution: Found along the Kavango River, Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip), Kwando River, Linyanti Marshes and the Chobe/Zambezi River systems.
Diet: Forages on the ground and in flowers and leaves, holding larger items by the feet. Eats mainly beetles, termites, ants, locusts, grass and Acacia seeds. Also takes nectar and leftovers from tables.

Description: Cucullatus is a Latin word for 'hooded' referring to the yellow forehead and crown. Other colourations include dark olive-brown flight feathers and yellow underwings.
Breeding: Every male from the colony builds up to 5 nests, demolishing unsuitable homes not selected by the female. From 2 to 5 eggs are laid from January to March and incubated by the female only for around 12 days.

Size: 16cm.

Weight: 35g.
