Spotted crakes are usually observed singly or in pairs in dense grass, at the edge of dams and marshes and seasonally flooded grassland.

Introduction: Spotted crakes (Porzana porzana) are usually observed singly or in pairs in dense grass, at the edge of dams and marshes and seasonally flooded grassland. A characteristic is their deliberate, long walking strides with jerky head movements.

Distribution: Generally uncommon but scattered populations in the Caprivi, Etosha National Park and Windhoek.

Diet: Earthworms, small fish, seeds and spiders.

Description: Medium-sized crake. Fine white spots and streaks on feathers, forehead, hind neck and side.

Breeding: Breeds outside of Namibia.

Size: 23cm.

Weight: 85g.
