Phalaropus lobatus
The red-necked phalarope is only found in Namibia at coastal salt pans and sewage works.

Introduction: The red-necked phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) is only found in Namibia at coastal salt pans and sewage works. This species can float on the water and occur singly or in small groups. Known to be tame.

Distribution: Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Also found in far eastern Caprivi.

Diet: Forages in shallow water as it swims with other waders for crustaceans and insects. A feature of the red-necked phalarope is the ability to spin on the water which pulls prey to the surface.

Description: Small thin-billed wader. Lobatus refers to their 'lobed' toes as does the Greek word Phalaropes which means 'coot-like' feet.

Breeding: Extralimital.

Size: 18cm.

Weight: 35g.
