Little stints can be observed in both inland and coastal wetland habitat.

Little stint

Introduction: Little stints (Calidris minuta) can be observed in both inland and coastal wetland habitats, as well as other inland areas associated with pans and where wet mud exists. Concentrations of thousands are common prior to migration.

Distribution: Coastal Namibia including Luderitz, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay extending through the northern coastal Namib Desert as far as the Kunene River estuary. Also found in Etosha National Park, Tsumkwe and Kaudom Game Park and the Caprivi.

Diet: Forages on wet sand and mud or shallow water for small invertebrates.

Description: The name of this species is confirmed in the German word minuta = tiny. Colouration often confused with other stints, even though it is the smallest of this species.

Breeding: Extralimital.

Size: 14cm.

Weight: 24g.

Wingspan: 34cm.
