Lesser sand plover

Introduction: Lesser sand plovers (Charadrius mongolus) inhabit sandy beaches and mudflats associated with estuaries. Sand dunes close to the coast also double up as a high tide roosting location. Observations with this species feeding and roosting with other waders such as the greater sand plover and white-fronted plover are common.
Distribution: Vagrant to Swakopmund and Walvis Bay and Etosha National Park.

Diet: Forages by run-stop-search method to peck quickly for worms and small crabs, the latter being taken apart before being eaten.

Description: Small plover with characteristic black and white head pattern and breast bands.

Breeding: Palearctic migrant breeders.

Size: 20cm. Weight: 55g. Wingspan: 55cm.
