Staurolite

Introduction: Cruciform twinned crystals often occur in staurolite, hence the Greek stauros meaning 'cross'. It is a metamorphic mineral usually found in schist and common in heavy-mineral sand deposits.

Distribution: Excavated near the Old Gorab Mine from the early 20th century.

Composition: Silicate

Crystal system: Monoclinic

Lustre: Resinous,vitreous

Streak: White to pale grey

Hardness: 7-7.5
