Fun Fact: Hematite is a deep red coloured iron oxide mineral.

Introduction: Hematite is a deep red coloured iron oxide mineral, hence the Greek name 'aima' meaning 'blood'. A relatively common mineral, on occasions it forms striking bright silver crystals. It is found in a variety of rocks. Iron from hematite is used to make steels and alloys.

Distribution: Kalkveld Complex, the Otjosondu manganese field, the basalt cavities in the Gobosobeb Mountains west of Brandberg and in the Erongo Mountain pegmatites.

Composition: Oxide

Crystal system: Hexagonal

Lustre: Submetallic, metallic

Streak: Red to brownish-red

Hardness: 5-6
