Introduction: Goethite is usually found as a soft, earthy coating on other minerals and on rocks. It is a common find in Namibia. Goethite is named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a German poet and scientist who lived from 1749 to 1832.

Distribution: Farm Eisenberg 78 in the Otjiwarongo District, the Berg Aukas Mine and in the iron-rich rocks in the Otjosondu manganese field. Also found in pegmatites in the Erongo Mountain and Klein Spitzkoppe.

Composition: Hydroxide

Crystal system: Orthorhombic

Lustre: Submetallic, dull

Streak: orange, brown

Hardness: 5-5.5
