Cerussite

Fun Fact: Cerussite is derived from the Latin cerussa, meaning 'white lead'.

Introduction: Cerussite is derived from the Latin cerussa which means 'white lead'. The heaviness and characteristic snowflake type twinned crystals are two of their main features. Although usually white to grey or colourless, the addition of other minerals or elements can change the colour to green, black, red or blue crystals.

Distribution: Common at (the now defunct) Tsumeb Mine Vanadium deposits at Berg Aukas had white cerussite crystals. Also found at the Kombat Mine and at the Ai-Ais Lead Mine, the Uitsab Vanadium Mine and the Namib Lead Mine.

Composition: Carbonate

Crystal system: Orthorhombic

Lustre: Resinous, adamantine

Streak: White

Hardness: 3-3.5
