Fun Fact: Marble is a formed from sandstone and mined in quarries.

Introduction: Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from sandstone and mined in quarries. It is highly valued for its appearance, resistance to fire and erosion, plus overall strength.

Distribution: White marble occurs in the Karibib and Usakos Districts where several variations are quarried and marketed as dimension stone.

Composition: Calcite or dolomite or a combination of these carbonate minerals.

Colouration: Many colours often mixed. Impurities in the minerals produce variations in colour.

Uses: Buildings, monuments and sculptures. Finely ground marble can be used as abrasives for soaps. Other uses include in paving roads, roofing materials and for flooring.
