Western sand snake

Introduction: The Western Sand snake (Psammophis trigammus) is a very slender snake found in an arid scrubland habitat. They are very fast and active during the heat of the day, a neat trick when out foraging for a spot of lunch.

Distribution: Western Namibia including the northern Namib Desert, Etosha National Park and as far south as Swakopmund. The population extends south along the central highlands to the Orange River including Fish River Canyon.

Diet: Skinks and lacertids.

Colouring: The body is pale olive to grey-brown with a reddish to yellowish backside. The belly is off-white.

Breeding: Females lay a small amount of eggs.

Size: Max SVL male 750mm, female 540mm.
