Black file snake

Introduction: File Snakes have a wide distribution range, but are rarely seen due to their secretive nature. File snakes feed on other snakes and small vertebrates, constricting their prey.

The Black File snake (Mehelya nyassae) is a small species that is found in mainly savannah type vegetation that borders coastal forest.

Distribution: There is a small population in and around the Dordabis area with a separate range in the eastern Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) from Rundu extending to Victoria Falls and the Chobe River regions.

Diet: Mainly lizards and skinks and akin to the Cape file snake, this species will also attack other venomous snakes.

Colouring: Dark-brown to purple-brown upper body and a dark olive to black belly.

Breeding: Females lay up to 6 eggs.

Size: Max SVL male 437mm, female 520mm.
