Spotted sandveld lizard

Introduction: The Spotted Sandveld lizard (Nucras intertexta) is a large lizard that is identifiable by its distinctive back and tail markings. They prefer a habitat of arid savannah, especially on Kalahari sand.

Distribution: North central Namibia extending into Kaokoland.

Diet: This species of lizard forage in open dry savannah for slower moving food sources such as scorpions, spiders and at times, other lizards.

Colouring: The back is brown to reddish-brown, with a system of pale spots that are sometimes black edged or blend to form net pattern or irregular, cross bands. The belly is creamy white and the tail orange-brown.

Breeding: Females lay between 2 to 8 eggs that hatch in February to March.

Size: SVL 80 to 90mm. Max SVL 94mm.
