Short headed sand lizard

Introduction: The Short-Headed Sand lizard (Pedioplanis breviceps) is endemic to Namibia, foraging on open, sandy plains and in dry riverbeds. They are slender, have a short head (hence the name) and are smaller than most other sand lizards.

Distribution: Western areas of central and northern Namib Desert.

Diet: Small insects.

Colouring: Males and females have different colouration. Adult males are uniform light brown, with numerous grey spots. Hatchlings and females have 5 distinct dark stripes on the back.

Breeding: Between 2 to 4 eggs are laid in March to May.

Size: SVL 35 to 45mm. Max SVL 46mm.
