Common rough scaled lizard

Ichnotropis squamulosa
Fun Fact: The Common Rough-Scaled lizard has a small head and small body scales.

Introduction: The Common Rough-Scaled lizard (Ichnotropis squamulosa) is another medium-sized lizard with a small head and small body scales. They can be seen in their distribution area hunting on flat, sandy openings.

Distribution: Throughout the entire north-eastern areas of Namibia, spreading to the Kalahari Desert.

Diet: They feed mainly on termites, but can catch grasshoppers and beetles.

Colouring: A pale buff to dark grey-brown back, adorned with narrow, broken, dark blotchy crossbands. The belly is white to grey.

Breeding: Females dig burrows with branching cavities at the base of Acacia trees. It is not uncommon to find more than 1 female sharing the same location.

Size: SVL 60 to 70mm. Max SVL 76mm.
