Southern foam nest frog

Introduction: Southern Foam Nest frog (Chiromantis xerampelina) inhabit seasonal or permanent open water bodies in various bushveld vegetation types. Calls and croaks are performed from overhanging trees or tall grass near water. Xerampelina refers to the grey, dry appearance resembling dry grass.

Distribution: Eastern Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) and the Okavango Delta.

Diet: Aquatic insects and spiders.

Colouration: Dark grey to whitish upperparts, with scattered dark markings. Has the ability to colour change from light to dark depending on disturbance and surroundings. The throat and chest is white with grey speckling.

Breeding: Tadpoles grow up to 85mm. The body is a uniform brown to orange-brown.
