Namaqua caco

Introduction: Namaqua Caco (Cacosternum namaquense) are named after Namaqualand where the first observations were recorded. Their main habitat is restricted to succulent Karoo vegetation.

Distribution: Fish River Canyon and sections of the Ai-Ais Richterveld Transfrontier Park.

Diet: Ants, termites and other insects.

Colouration: Irregular blotches of brown and beige on granular skin. There is distinct pale triangle on the head. The underside is light coloured with some dark patches and mottling on the throat.

Breeding: Breeds around July to April in temporary rock pools, river beds, seeps, springs, dams, quarries and some permanent pools. Tadpoles grow to 50mm. They have large, oval bodies.

Maximum size: 25mm.
