Dwarf puddle frog

Introduction: Dwarf Puddle frogs (Phrynobatrachus mababiensis) were named after the Mababe Depression in Okavango Delta, from where they were first collected. They have small bodies, with a fleshy, pointed snout. Open wooded savannah and grasslands provide their main habitats. The insect sounding buzz lasts for around 1 second, performed from hidden spots at the base of vegetation or in shallow water.

Distribution: Northern Namibia less for the Namib Desert.

Diet: Mainly insects.

Colouration: Grey to brown upperparts with series of dark or light markings and patches. The underside of the chest is speckled grey.

Breeding: Tadpoles grow to 18mm. They change into frogs after about 35 days.

Maximum size: 20mm.
