Boettgers caco

Introduction: Boettger's Caco (Cacosternum boettgeri) are named after the German herpetologist Oscar Boettger of the Senckenberg Museum. Features include narrow heads and a long neck. Habitats include Nama Karoo, succulent Karoo, thicket and grassland. Abundant in grassland areas but absent from forest and true desert. Also known as Dainty Frogs.

Distribution: Found in eastern Namibia. Absent from Namib Desert. Observed in Etosha National Park, Kalahari Desert, Tsumkwe, Kaudom Game Park and south-eastern Namibia.

Diet: Insects and spiders.

Colouration: Emerald-green to light to dark brown upperparts, decorated with a number of spots or stripes. The underside has small grey to black spots.

Breeding: Tadpoles grow up to 28mm. Eggs hatch within 2 days with the metamorphose being completed in about 21 days.

Maximum size: 23mm.
