Round leaved teak

Round leaved teak

Pterocarpus rotundifolius
Fun Fact: This deciduous tree can grow up to 20m high, but 10m is more common.

Round-leaved teak (Pterocarpus rotundifolius): This deciduous tree can grow up to 20m high, but 10m is more common. It grows in Kalahari sands and in the stony areas of north-west Namibia near Epupa Falls and the Hartmann's and Baynes Mountains. The bark is dark-grey to brown and the older branches a dark-grey as well and the leaves are pale green with a greyish tinge. Beautiful bright yellow sweet-scented flowers bloom from October to December, rain dependant. The round fruit pod is dark brown as are the seeds.

Many species of game and livestock browse the leaves. A low quality yellowish wood has brown annual rings and is used by locals to make household wares. The larvae of the Bushveld Charaxinae uses this tree as a host-plant.
