Ringwood tree

The Ringwood tree (Maerua schinzii) is often mistaken with the Shepherds tree, mainly because it also has a whitish trunk. However, the leaves are usually larger, fleshier and yellowish green. The tree is very eye-catching when in full bloom, the conspicuous flowers have clusters of light yellow stamens that exude a pleasant, sweet smell that attract bees and other insects. Seeds are contained in a long beanlike pod and the seeds and leaves are eaten by many animals, whilst birds and rodents are partial to the seeds. As it is an important shade tree, the Ringwood is a protected species in Namibia.
