Bastard dwaba berry

Bastard dwaba-berry (Friesodielsia obovata): This plant belongs to the custard-apple family. It mainly grows along riverine woodlands along the eastern Okavango River and in other regions of the Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip). Either a shrub or a tree it can grow from 2 to 10m high, has dark grey to grey bark with pale brown branchlets. Their leaves are a hairless pale green colour. Single flowers are green-yellow and bloom from February to March and depending on conditions can be as early as November.

Between 7 and 9 sausage-shaped monocarps (a 1-chambered fruit) are red when ripe. Their seeds are black. The fruits can be eaten or cooked raw into a tasty red jelly. The Cream-striped Swordtail is attracted to the bastard dwaba-berry.
