Cape smilax

Asparagus asparagoides
Fun Fact: Cape Smilax are from the subfamily Asparagaceae.

Cape Smilax (Asparagus asparagoides) are from the subfamily Asparagaceae. Their distribution is restricted to southern Namibia, in particular in and around Fish River Canyon and along the banks of the Orange River.

Insects are attracted to their sweet-scented white flowers and birds eat the bright red berries. Traditional medicine uses include treating sore eyes. They are fairly drought resistant, require some water and grow climbs to about 2m.
